Jeff Mazzone
Jeff Mazzone is a licensed professional counselor and co-founder of Harmonia Counseling Group.
Born in Philadelphia and raised in Southern Maryland by parents both enlisted in the U.S. Navy who later divorced, Jeff lived in the Bronx and the lower Hudson Valley area of New York for 18 years before relocating to Fredericksburg in 2022. Jeff previously pursued the Catholic priesthood from 2002 to 2006 as a college seminarian for the Archdiocese of Washington, and then as a temporarily professed friar from 2006 to 2010 with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal (CFRs). Jeff later met and married his wife who is born of immigrant parents from Dominican Republic. They have four children.
As a clinician, Jeff works with teenagers, lay adults, and clergy seeking healing from:
anxiety and depression
obsessive-compulsive behaviors
trauma and moral injury
adverse life experiences
unwanted sexual behaviors and pornography use
feelings of insecurity and low self-worth
stress and mismanaged anger
neediness in relationships
codependency, people-pleasing, and poor boundaries
Jeff desires to help clients uncover and uproot whatever may inhibit joy with one’s self and one’s relationships. He aims to assist clients in resolving deep-seated insecurity, inadequacy, inferiority, and low self-worth. He strives to accompany clients in discovering peace and wise living free from restlessness, overthinking, and worry.
His approach to counseling incorporates psychodynamic, person-centered, and existential modalities, along with cognitive-behavioral methods from exposure therapy and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) each integrated with an understanding of the human person derived from the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas as understood by the late Catholic psychiatrists Anna Terruwe and Conrad Baars.
Jeff also offers Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) following his certified training through the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) approved trainers at Intuitus Group.
He is trained for the optional integration of the Catholic Christian into his therapeutic approach.
Jeff earned a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University in 2021. He received the Ronald E. Hawkins Distinguished Counseling Student Legacy Award, the highest honor Liberty bestows upon a counseling student. Jeff also earned a Master of Arts in Theology from St. Joseph’s Seminary in 2015.
He completed his clinical internship with licensed psychologist Timothy G. Lock, PhD at the Goretti Center for Healing and Forgiveness in Brookfield, CT. He completed residency at Revelations Counseling & Consulting in Fredericksburg, VA under the supervision of Guy Strawder, LMFT, LPC (Lt. Colonel [Ret.], USA).
Jeff also presents at professional conferences and publishes articles in peer-reviewed professional publications where he advocates for therapists to move from merely alleviating a client’s symptoms to promoting a client’s intellectual, volitional, emotional, spiritual, bodily, and relational flourishing.
